Paris in Music: The Seine River Cruise Playlist

Concept and Purpose

The river-cruise playlist is a simple idea that connects your itinerary to the music that was created in that region. This project, developed by DeSalvio Travel, a Virtuoso luxury boutique travel agency, and concert pianist Robert Poortinga.

Today I would like to introduce the Seine River Cruise Playlist, the first of our musical cruise itineraries. I invite you to listen while voyaging along the Seine, preparing for your next trip, or reminiscing about one taken long ago. It is immersive and personal, which is the core of this project. We want you to enjoy your travels more fully and to have all your senses engaged while exploring.

A city can have its own scent, a dish in a small bistro can stay in your memory for years, and the light at dusk over the river can feel like a scene from a dream. With this playlist, we want to enhance that feeling, bringing history, travel, culture, and your own experience together through sound.

Why Paris and French Composers

Paris was one of the great capitals of music in Europe. During the Romantic era, it became a magnet for composers, attracting Liszt, Chopin, Debussy, Satie, Ravel, and many others. For this reason, I chose works that reflect that era and spirit — pieces that allow you to feel the same atmosphere those composers once lived in.

One of the reasons composers loved Paris was because of its countless salons. These were gatherings of the European intelligentsia, where people would meet weekly to play music, recite poetry, and debate everything from art to politics. They were hosted by influential women and became the heartbeat of Parisian cultural life.

At the same time, painters like Monet, Renoir, Cézanne, and Degas were transforming the visual world through Impressionism. Their play with light and perception influenced music and poetry alike. Debussy, though he disliked the label, wrote works that captured this same Parisian light — Clair de Lune and Rêverie are perfect examples.

When I walk through Paris in the evening, these are the pieces that come to mind. They make me dream away, soft, intimate, full of nostalgia and imagination.

The Playlist

  • Debussy, Rêverie — captures the dreamlike calm and poetic tenderness of the city’s quieter moments.
  • Satie, Gymnopédie No. 1 — minimalist grace, the sound of Parisian simplicity and elegance.
  • Satie, Petite Ouverture à Danser — charm and wit, a glimpse into the city’s artistic eccentricity.
  • Chopin, Nocturne Op. 9 No. 2, Op. 48 No. 1, Fantaisie-Impromptu, Ballade No. 3 — the emotional soul of Romantic Paris, full of passion, melancholy, and brilliance.
  • Liszt, Liebestraum No. 3 — lyrical and introspective, echoing the sentimentality of late-night salons.
  • Debussy, Clair de Lune — the timeless farewell to Paris by moonlight.

Listener Experience

This playlist is ideal for travellers preparing for a Seine River cruise, visiting Paris, or simply enjoying a quiet evening at home. Robert selected pieces that are familiar and also include some that listeners might discover for the first time. None are overly long or heavy; they are meant to be enjoyed without intellectual and very attentive listening. Chopin’s Nocturnes, Satie’s Gymnopédies, and Liszt’s Liebestraum all have that ability to draw you in immediately. Whether you are sailing the Seine or strolling through the boulevards with their elegant façades, this music can transport you back to a time when Paris was the creative center of the world.

Brand and Partnership

The Seine River Cruise Playlist is part of the Concert and Cruises initiative. Our goal is to create a new kind of immersive travel, one that allows you not only to see a destination but to hear and feel it.

Each playlist corresponds to a region or journey, from Caribbean Cruise Piano Classics to the upcoming Rhine and Danube, with at least seven playlists planned for release by the end of 2026. All will be freely available on major platforms, so that everyone can experience this project.

We are also creating special live events in partnership with Viking Cruises, Ponant and Lindblad where travelers can join me and Robert Poortinga for events of music and storytelling. These events combine concert, conversation, and presentation, and are completely free to attend. Guests who book their next voyage within thirty days of the event will receive exclusive amenities and discounts offered by both the major Cruise Lines and DeSalvio Travel.

Our aim is simple: to make your dream voyage come true. Music is, to me, a way to bring happiness to others. That is the ultimate goal of art: to move people and let them experience something beautiful. Because of that, I am genuinely proud of this concept and the collaboration behind it.
