A Journey Through Sound and Story

During the evening, Robert Poortinga performs a specially curated piano programme inspired by Europe’s great rivers and cultural capitals. Works by Debussy, Chopin, Liszt, Brahms, and Strauss unfold like chapters of a voyage across centuries and cities.

Between the pieces, he reveals the hidden stories behind the music, giving glimpses from the book that he is currently writing about the travelling composers from 1750-1918. Showing what composers went through to become successful and the incredible risks they were taking by crossing seas and mountains makes one listen truly different to their incredible compositions.
