Four Seasons George V: Parisian Palace Luxury

The Flower Palace of Paris

The Four Seasons George V is the Four Seasons. We had only planned a very quick visit because our itinerary had changed by a day, but Jean Philippe, the head of sales, immediately told us we were more than welcome. Marisa has known him for years, so it was lovely to see each other again.

The first thing you notice is the flowers. The hotel is known as the flower palace of Paris, with around 12,000 flowers changed throughout the property each week. They are everywhere without making the hotel feel like a flower shop. The whole place feels very luxurious. Not understated luxury, either. You know there is a lot of wealth around you, although it never feels intimidating. The hotel is frequented by royals and people who are accustomed to this level of service, and the staff clearly know exactly how to look after them.

The kindness and attentiveness of the staff was one of the things that stayed with us. Even when something unexpected happened and we had to move from the bar, everything was handled without any fuss.

A Palace With Six Michelin Stars

The George V was restored over three years, and the interiors make it clear why the hotel has such a strong reputation. Antique pieces sit alongside upholstered furniture inspired by Louis XIV and Louis XV styles. It creates a very traditional French palace feeling while still meeting the expectations of a modern luxury hotel.

We saw several rooms and suites. They were beautiful, with a lot of attention given to natural light. Some looked towards Paris while others faced the famous courtyard, which is home to restaurants holding six Michelin stars between them. The higher suites were particularly impressive. The views over Paris are extraordinary, and the location puts you very close to the Eiffel Tower and only two streets from the Champs-Élysées.

I also noticed something rather practical. Some of the suites had proper male suit hangers. It sounds like a small thing, but for guests travelling with expensive or specially tailored or designer clothing, these details matter. The bathrooms were another highlight. Some have televisions built into the mirrors, which was a first for me. Seeing that while looking towards the Eiffel Tower is quite something.

Where Classical Paris Meets Modern Luxury

There is a lot of traditional French detail throughout the hotel. The wallpapers have prints that recall the period before Napoleon, and there are paintings, prints and tapestries throughout the property. The tapestries in one of the restaurants was particularly beautiful. The furniture is handled very carefully. Depending on the room or public space, you find pieces inspired by the fourteenth and fifteenth Louis styles, but they never make the hotel feel old-fashioned.

Then there is the piano. As a pianist, I immediately noticed the Fazioli. Fazioli and Steinway are, in my view, among the very top piano makers in the world. A hotel choosing a Fazioli tells me something. It is not simply choosing the most famous name. Someone has thought about quality and taste. That reminded me of what we noticed at Mandarin Lutetia with its Pleyel instrument. The choices are completely different, but both show that the hotel has a particular vision.

A Day I Would Happily Spend Inside

The George V is in a very central part of Paris, close to the Champs-Élysées. That makes it extremely convenient, although clients who prefer a quieter neighbourhood should understand that this is very much a central Paris location.

For the right client, however, there is almost no reason to leave the property for a day.

If I had an entire day there, I would start with breakfast. I would probably try both breakfast rooms, including the white-glow room. Then I would spend the morning in the spa and pool before returning to the room to get ready properly. The afternoon would be quiet. I would read for a while and enjoy being in the room. Then I would dress for dinner and have a long multi-course meal before finishing the evening at the English-style Bar, with a Pastis or a Cognac.

That is the sort of day the George V makes possible. Paris is right outside, but the hotel itself is enough of an experience that staying in becomes a perfectly good option.
