Three Days Beyond Amsterdam: Our Ideal Post-Cruise Netherlands Itinerary

Three Days Beyond Amsterdam: A Post-Cruise Itinerary Through the Netherlands

When clients finish a river cruise in Amsterdam, the easy choice is to stay in Amsterdam. There is certainly enough to fill several days. But for this trip, we wanted to use Amsterdam as a base and show our clients more of the Netherlands.

They had three days. We used them to combine some of Amsterdam's essential experiences with Delft, The Hague, the River Vecht and Slot Zuylen.

If you are interested in why we believe the Netherlands should be experienced beyond Amsterdam, we wrote more about that here: Beyond Amsterdam: Understanding the Netherlands Through Art, History and Place.

The beautiful centre of Amsterdam

Day One: Amsterdam, From the Canals to the Golden Age

We began with three nights at Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam, which worked particularly well as a base because of its central location.

The first afternoon was deliberately easy. A private walking and food experience took our clients through the historic centre, with stops including the Begijnhof, the old Jewish quarter and the former home of Rembrandt. There was also time for Dutch specialties along the way, including stroopwafels, herring, cheese and bitterballen.

We included the Van Loon Mansion because it gives a very different perspective on Amsterdam's Golden Age. Rather than looking at the city only through its canals and major monuments, the house gives you an idea of how wealthy Amsterdam families actually lived.

Dinner that evening was at Jansz.

Day Two: Delft and The Hague

The next morning we left Amsterdam by private vehicle for Delft.

Our first stop was Royal Delft, the seventeenth-century Delftware factory that is still producing Delft Blue today. From there we continued into Delft itself, walking through the historic centre and visiting both the Old Church and New Church.

After lunch in Delft, it was only a short drive to The Hague. This was the day we most wanted our clients to experience the Netherlands beyond Amsterdam. The Hague has a completely different character, and Delft is another side of Dutch history altogether.

In The Hague they visited Panorama Mesdag before continuing to the Mauritshuis. The day brought them from Delftware to the historic city centre, then into two very different art experiences. They returned to Amsterdam in the early evening, leaving the evening free.

Day Three: Canals, Music and the River Vecht

The following morning began back in Amsterdam, but from the water.

Our clients had a private saloon boat, the Ivresse, taking them through the canals before dropping them near the Van Gogh Museum. From there they continued to the Concertgebouw for an afternoon concert. Later that day, we took them in the opposite direction entirely.

A private vehicle brought them to Loenen aan de Vecht, where they boarded another historic saloon boat for a private cruise along the River Vecht. The river is lined with the country estates built by wealthy Amsterdam merchants who wanted somewhere outside the city.

They continued to Slot Zuylen, one of the historic castles along the Vecht. There are many castles in Europe, but these Dutch country estates are particularly characteristic of the Netherlands and give visitors a completely different sense of the country.

The day finished back in Amsterdam with a visit to the Anne Frank House and dinner at Bridges at the hotel.

Why We Designed It This Way

Our clients loved the itinerary, particularly because they saw much more than Amsterdam.

We did not want to remove Amsterdam from the trip. We wanted to put it in context. Three days gave us enough time to experience the city, while also getting out to Delft, The Hague and the River Vecht. If we were designing another post-cruise stay, we would use the same principle. Utrecht, Leiden and Delft would all be possibilities, depending on the clients' interests.

The Netherlands is small enough that you can move beyond Amsterdam without turning every day into a long journey. That makes it particularly well suited to a post-cruise extension. And sometimes the best way to understand Amsterdam is to leave it for a day.

Continue Your Journey Beyond the Cruise

A river cruise gives you a wonderful introduction to the Netherlands, but it only shows part of the country. Adding a few carefully planned days before or after your cruise allows us to take you beyond the usual itinerary and introduce you to places that many visitors never see.

At DeSalvio Travel, we design these extensions around your interests, your pace and the kind of experiences you value. For some travelers, that might mean Delft and The Hague. For others, it could be Utrecht, Leiden, the Dutch countryside, private museum visits, historic estates or a more in-depth exploration of Amsterdam.

We take care of the details, from selecting the right hotel and private guides to arranging transportation, reservations and experiences that work naturally together. The result is not simply extra time in the Netherlands, but a thoughtfully designed journey that complements your river cruise.
